One robot mower can look after a front and a back lawn, or several patches of grass, as long as it can drive from one to the next or you don't mind carrying it. How that works depends on how the mower finds its way.

Wire-free mowers: zones and paths in the app

You map each lawn as its own zone, then draw a path between them across the patio, drive or side passage. The mower follows the path with its blades off and mows each zone in turn. Where the makers publish a limit, the number of zones runs from 5 to 120 on the mowers we track.

If the lawns aren't joined by something the mower can drive over, such as steps or a road, you map the second lawn on its own, carry the mower there and start it from the app. It can't get back to its dock by itself, so it gets carried back too.

Side passages and satellite signal

A narrow passage between houses is the hardest part of the route for a satellite () mower. Walls on both sides hide much of the sky, and the mower can lose its position and stop halfway. and camera mowers work out where they are from what they can see, so a passage troubles them less. If your route runs between two buildings, start with those; the mowers that don't rely on satellites are listed together.

Width matters too. Few makers publish the narrowest gap their mower will go through. These are the ones that do:

Boundary-wire mowers: guide wires and second loops

A wired mower can use a passage if the runs along both sides of it. Husqvarna recommends at least 2 metres between the wires, or 60 cm if you add a guide wire down the middle for the mower to follow home. A lawn that isn't joined to the main one needs its own wire loop, and again you carry the mower between them.

The front lawn and theft

A mower on an open front lawn is easier to pick up and walk off with than one behind a side gate. GPS tracking, a PIN and a lift alarm all help. So does keeping the dock in the back garden and sending the mower to the front on a schedule while you're home. More in theft and insurance.

Which mower to look at

Lawns joined by a passage between buildings: or camera mowers. Open lawns with clear sky, joined by a drive or path: mowers handle several zones well and are often cheaper. If you would rather lay a wire, check the passage is at least 60 cm wide and plan for a guide wire. Add the two lawns together for the size, then use the garden-fit tool to narrow the list.
