Why this site exists

We have a large lawn, about 1,400 m², and mowing it was eating into time I'd rather spend with my young family. A ride-on mower was the obvious answer, but the price put me off, and so did the servicing and the thought of it taking over the garage.

So I started looking at robot mowers. That's when it got difficult. There were dozens of models, a lot of the technology was new, and the specs were hard to compare. Some needed a and some didn't. Some needed Wi-Fi or a subscription. Some couldn't cut to the edge of the lawn. Working out which one actually suited my garden took weeks of late nights and a very long spreadsheet.

Robot Mower Finder is that spreadsheet, made useful for everyone else.

How we rank mowers

Rankings are based on specs and features only. What a retailer pays us never changes a score or a recommendation. See how we score mowers.

What we don't do

We don't sell mowers or take paid placements. We haven't tested every model ourselves. Our comparisons use makers' specs and UK retailers' listings, and each mower page shows its sources and the date they were checked.

Our own mower

We did buy one in the end, known at home as Mowan Atkinson. He's doing a great job. The lawn more or less looks after itself now, and there's something oddly hypnotic about sitting on the patio watching him go about his business.

The only downside so far is that he gets stuck on the occasional fallen apple. Funnily enough, that isn't in the manufacturer's specs. Maybe I'll add it in a future update.
